Sailfish are often considered the fastest fish in the ocean, capable of swimming at speeds up to 68 miles per hour (110 km/h), thanks to their streamlined bodies and powerful tails.
Sailfish are named after their large, sail-like dorsal fin, which they can raise and lower. This sail can help them stabilize while swimming at high speeds and may also be used to herd schools of fish.
There are two main species of sailfish: the Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus albicans) and the Indian and Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus). The Atlantic sailfish is found in the Atlantic Ocean, while the Pacific sailfish is found in the Pacific.
Sailfish are known for their spectacular leaps out of the water. They often jump in an effort to shake off predators or during hunting, as they chase down smaller fish.
Sailfish are carnivorous and primarily feed on small fish, like sardines and anchovies. They use their long, slender bills to slash through schools of fish, stunning or injuring them before feeding.
Sailfish have a unique ability to regulate the temperature of their brain and eyes, which helps them to see clearly in colder waters while hunting. Their eyes are specially adapted to maintain a higher temperature, giving them an advantage when hunting prey in deep, colder waters.
Sailfish can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) long and weigh up to 200 pounds (90 kg), though they are more commonly found between 6 and 8 feet long.
Despite their large size, sailfish have a relatively short lifespan. They typically live only 4 to 5 years in the wild.
Sailfish are migratory, and they often travel across vast ocean distances in search of food and optimal breeding conditions. In particular, they can be found in tropical and subtropical waters.
Sailfish are considered a top target for sport fishermen, thanks to their speed, agility, and the challenge they present. Catch and release is common for sailfish in sport fishing tournaments, as they are often released back into the ocean after being caught.

Let’s explore some amazing facts about bull sharks—and why diving with them could be the adventure of a lifetime.
Unlike most sharks, bull sharks can navigate seamlessly between freshwater and saltwater. This is due to their ability to regulate salt levels in their bodies through their kidneys and special glands. This rare ability allows them to inhabit diverse environments, from the ocean’s open waters to river systems and even lakes.
Bull sharks play a vital role in maintaining balance within their ecosystems. As apex predators, they regulate populations of fish and other marine life, contributing to the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds.
The “bull” in bull shark comes from their muscular build and bold, assertive hunting style. They tend to charge prey in a manner reminiscent of a bull. They’re not afraid to explore new territories, making them some of the most widely distributed sharks globally.
Bull sharks are often found in murky waters, such as river mouths and estuaries. They rely heavily on their keen senses of smell and electroreception (detecting electrical signals from other animals) to locate prey even in poor visibility.
Bull sharks have one of the most powerful bite forces of all sharks relative to their size. Research has shown their bite force can exceed that of even larger species, such as the great white. This strength helps them prey on a wide variety of animals, from fish to dolphins and even other sharks.
Bull sharks are found in warm, shallow waters worldwide, including oceans, rivers, and lakes. They’ve been spotted in unexpected places, such as Lake Nicaragua in Central America and even Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans.
Bull sharks are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Females typically give birth in shallow, protected areas where their pups can avoid larger predators.
Despite their reputation as one of the “big three” sharks (alongside great whites and tiger sharks), bull sharks are not mindless killers. Most interactions are harmless, and if you want to dive with them, Pro Dive International ensures a controlled, safe, and respectful diving environment where you can observe their natural behavior without risk.

Cenotes are access points to a massive underground water system that is slowly flowing out into the ocean. The caves through which this water flows are pitch-dark with no natural light and so are home to only a few species. But where the cave roof has collapsed and cenotes were formed, light floods in creating a great habitat for many kinds of fish, plants, turtles, crabs and much more.
Some of those cenotes are located by the ocean and get visitors swimming in. Manatees, tarpons, snappers, moray eels, crocodiles, and so much more can be found enjoying these jungle oases.
