Called Ah-Cuzamil-Peten (Land of Swallows) by its earliest inhabitants, Cozumel has been a favorite destination for divers since 1961, when Jacques Yves Cousteau´s documentary broadcast Cozumel´s glorious sea life to the world.
Today Cozumel belongs to the world´s TOP 10 dive spots, a true underwater marvel.
Situated in front of Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is a teardrop-shaped coral island, formed by a limestone plateau of 151 sq. miles/ 392 sqkm. Measuring 34 miles/ 56km from North to South and 8 miles/ 14km from East to West, Cozumel is Mexico largest island and the oldest in the Caribbean group. The island is separated from the mainland by a channel only 12 miles/ 19km wide.
There are more than 30 dive sites waiting to be explored and the majority are situated along the West coast and southern end of the island.
Cozumel has an international airport, fully equipped for both large jets and private planes. International arrivals are expected to fill out a Customs Declaration & a Mexican Tourism Card before the plane lands. Taxis are widely available and not expensive. Always ask how much the fare will be before getting into the taxi. All taxi drivers must carry with them a rate sheet listing the approved fares.
Pro Dive Mexico features their own fleet of boats, possesses all required permits, employs multilingual staff onsite and holds the necessary licenses for this famous Marine Park. There are no further licenses granted to new applicants by the Mexican authorities to protect this ecosystem!
Did you know? With vibrant, bright yellow fins and a distinctive patterning, the COZUMEL SPLENDID TOADFISH is a species of toadfish entirely endemic to the island of Cozumel. Commonly found under coral outcroppings.
